Center for Iraq Studies
The Center for Iraq Studies (CIS) aims at facilitating and promoting exchange and cooperation between Iraqi and German researchers and universities. The network was founded in 2009 by Prof. Emeritus Sefik Alp Bahadir who directed CIS until spring 2018. Since then, Prof. Dr. Christine Binzel has taken over.
Since its inauguration in 2009, two projects were initiated, the Baghdad-Erbil-Erlangen-Project (BEEP), which lasted from 2009 to 2014, and the Iraqi-German Academic Cooperation Network (IG-CON), which lasted from 2014 to 2018. Both were funded, amongst others, by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the Iraqi Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MoHESR). CIS (co-)organized conferences and symposia both in Iraq and Germany and offered various training courses for Iraqi researchers in Germany.
CIS is currently exploring new opportunities to strengthen and promote scientific exchange and cooperation between Iraq and Germany with an emphasis on the social sciences. The center is also interested in supporting capacity building measures for Iraqi universities. For questions or ideas for cooperation, please contact Prof. Dr. Christine Binzel.
